    Transferables: How Many?

One of the often quoted numbers is ~184,000. As in, there are about 184,000 fully transferable machine guns in the US on the National Firearms Register and Transfer Record (NFRTR). That number started several years ago during comments made by then NFA Branch Chief, Ken Houchens. Since then, the number has gone down (destructions, etc.). But what is the *real* number? NFATCA has made an official FOIA inquiry to learn just that. If the number can be obtained, we'll get it and publish it.

Well, this could really affect prices. If the numbers come back lower, then prices may go even higher. This is bad news for guys like me that would like to obtain a MG one day.

On the other hand, maybe it would solidify people more to work hard to either amend the NFA or repeal the Hughes Amendment.

My gut tells me that the number is going to come in at right about the 184,000 mark. So no significant change. And even if it was lower, the market will not really be affected. The price has been going up because more people have decided to chase the limited number of available weapons. And the number of those weapons has been steadily declining at a slow rate. As far as folks getting "solidified"... It is sad to note that this community rarely comes together in common cause, much less ponies up funds to support such an effort.
